Board Meeting Minutes

March 13, 2008

 

Call To Order:

President Jack Miller called the meeting to order at 9:40 a.m.

 

Prayer:  Jerry DeFoor                               Pledge of Allegiance:  Ed Rich

 

Secretary's Report and Treasurer's Report:   

·        Motion by Lewis Elliott, 2nd by Bill Elkin to accept the reports as printed.  No discussion.  Voice Vote.  Motion Carried.

 

Board Meeting Report - Jack Miller:

·        Thanked Wilfred Navarro for his suggestion to increase the door prizes to four $50 prizes.  Four prizes will be awarded today and in the future.

·        Welcomed new members and first time attendees.

 

Houston Police Officers Pension System - Joe Glezman:

·        HPOPS' Star Studded Retiree Seminar will be April 19, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the HPD Academy.

·        HPOPS approved a 2008 Cola of 3.12% effective on the May check.

 

Executive Director - Bill Elkin:

·        Pension is @ $3.354 Billion.

·        22 officers have retired to date with 16 officers scheduled for March.

·        Legislative Report:

o       Visited with Representative Joe Crabb, Representative Debbie Riddle, Representative Ellen Cohen, Candidate for District 140 Ken Legler and Republican Candidate Allen Fletcher. 

o       Will continue to work toward the November general elections.

o       D.A. Miller recommended supporting Pearland Republican Randy Webber for State Representative.

·        Only the Retired Classified Officer is eligible for the IRS $3,000 gross health care insurance deduction.

·        Thank you notes were received from the families of Carolyn Rodriguez, Margaret LaRue and from member J.C. Vaughn.

·        Thank you notes were also received from Precinct 5 Constable Phil Campos for our endorsement and from HPOPS Toni DeWills for the invitation to the Surviving Spouse Luncheon.

HPD Family Assistance Division - Matt Perales, Mike Newsome, Bob Samtiere:

·        Thanked HPROA Family Assistance for their help.  There is a very good network between active and retired officers.

·        HPD Family Assistance Office was established in 1980.

·        Death Notices are e-mailed both within and outside the Department.

·        Lewis Elliott thanked them for all the things they do for active and retired officers and their families.

·        Sue Gaines outlined the support given to families, such as help planning, attending funerals, assistance with insurances and pension benefits, as well as any other problems survivors may encounter.

 

PAC Committee - Steve Rayne:

·        PAC met twice last month to discuss candidates in the June and November elections.

·        Please contact Steve if you have items to donate to the Crockett Reunion Silent Auction. 

 

Website Committee - Jim Ashby:

·        7,079 website visitors last month.

·        If you are having e-mail problems contact Ashby at info@hproa.com or at 281-498-3834.

·        The website Username and Password is available to all members by contacting the Webmaster by e-mail at info@hproa.com.

 

Membership Committee - Ed Mitchell:

·        Eleven thousand letters were mailed out in January resulting in 35 new members and 22 reinstatements.       

 

The Retired Badge - Nelson Zoch:

·        The newspapers are in the mail.  

·        Articles may be e-mailed directly to Zoch at lt2212d599@hotmail.com.

·        Any member with an address change should contact HPROA Secretary Cathy Buckles at (713) 802-2967, or cathy@hpdretired.com. 

 

Entertainment Committee - D. A. Miller:

·        The annual Surviving Spouses Luncheon was very successful with 129 attendees.

·        Special thanks to Stefanie Leonard and Doug Bostock for organizing the luncheon, Cathy Buckles and Barbara Cotton for working the registration table and Don and Dorothy Weaver for the flowers.  Vickie Rayne donated a handmade police uniform lap quilt.  Thank you to everyone who donated the door prizes.  Also, special thanks to the HPD Honor Guard for their participation, to Andy Galayda for the police bears at each place setting, and to our speaker Mr. Morris Eickenhorst,

·        The Conroe Reunion will be held March 29, 2008 at the Houston Lake Conroe KOA from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.  Directions are on the website and in the Retired Badge. 

o       Items are needed for the Silent Auction and may be taken directly to the reunion.

o       There will not be an organized camper reunion this year.

·        Remember the HPOPS Retirement Seminar on April 19, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the HPD Academy.

 

Family Assistance Committee - Forrest Turbeville:

·        The FAC requested wheelchairs.  Four chairs were received today and no additional chairs are needed at this time.  

·        The sick and shut-in report is on the back table.  Please pick one up.  The oral report will cover only those added after the list was printed.  Family Assistance Reports are updated on the HPROA website. 

·        Please contact a member of the Family Assistance Committee with information regarding any officer who should to be contacted.  Delvin Kendrick, Nelson Foehner and Forrest Turbeville are on the Family Assistance Committee.  Turbeville can be reached by cell phone at (713) 319-5466.

 

Good /Welfare of the Association:

·        Hank Laird has not received a City Insurance package.

·        Bill Elkin recommended calling the City of Houston Benefit Office if you have not received an insurance package.
