Family Assistance Update
March 2008

CHESTER MASSEY (Update - 3-30-08 - Ruth Massey to Kendrick) Ruth said things are some better today.  He's at The Hampton's on Pinegate.  When she got him there on Friday he had to go, by wheelchair, into his room and last night and today he's been walking with his walker.  They're suppose to start therapy tomorrow. Ruth said to keep the prayers coming. We need to pray not only for Chester but also for Ruth.

BETTY MADDUX:  J. W. Maddux reports that his wife, Betty, has been transferred from Spring Branch hospital to Memorial Hermann in the Med. Center.  Betty continues to be have very serious problems with two open wounds on right leg and one open wound on the left.  The wounds are infected and there is the possibility that amputation may have to be considered. Betty has been in the hospital, into a rehab center and back into the hospital for 3 months with little improvement. Please pray for Betty and the Medical staff attending to her wounds that recovery and healing would be forthcoming.

 Nelson Foehner, FAC.

WALTER YARGO:  Sue Gaines reports that she visited with the Yargo's today and plans are being made to have Walter placed in hospice care soon. He is unresponsive and sleeps a great deal of the time. Continue to keep the Yargo family in your prayers.

Nelson Foehner, FAC

J. D. SPANN:  We called J.D.'s house at 5:00PM this PM and he was at home as planned.  We visited on the phone and he sounds great and glad to get back to his house with familiar surroundings.  He said he had everything he needed to recover including a wonderful nurse to take care of him.  Having been through two motorcycle wrecks, we would assume that the wife would have some good home care skills by now.  We are just pleased to see him home and said he would like to get some phone calls.  Call him at 281-356-6921 and keep J.D. in your every prayer.

 Nelson Foehner, FAC.

CHESTER MASSEY:  Ruth Massey reports this morning that Chester has been in St. Lukes Hospital since Tuesday.  She reports that Chester's legs are so weak that he can hardly stand and surely can't walk.  They are trying to get him into the Hampton at this time.  Ruth does not elaborate as to the Hampton, however, we believe it is a short term nursing facility at 2929 Post Oak.  Ruth asked that we hold our e-mails until they confirm plans and relocate Chester.  Currently, she states that she can be reached at 832-355-4107 and she does ask for our prayers during these difficult times.

BETTY MADDOX:  (Wife of Member J.W. Maddox) (3-26-08 - Kendrick) I received information from Bobby Foster that Betty Maddox was in Memorial Herman. I talked with Betty & J.W.'s son, Brad Maddox (Sgt. Clear Lake). He said that his mother has peripheral artery disease. She had bypass surgery on a leg in December and complications developed.  Brad said she has been in a healthcare facility ever since she had the surgery. He said today he took her to Memorial Hermann Heart & Vascular Institute and she was admitted there (Room 823). He said there is an open wound from the surgery and the heel of the foot on the opposite leg has ulcerated and become infected. Brad said his dad has also had health issues. Please keep Betty and J.W. in your prayers.

WILLIAM "BILL" HAMBY:   We finally made contact with Bill Hamby's wife. She reports that they have property in Needville and some near Huntsville Alabama and that Bill travels back and forth to keep things going.  In January, Bill developed pneumonia and test revealed that he had picked up a bacteria normally associated with horses.  They don't know where he picked it up at since they don't have any horses.  This disease in humans is usually fatal and only one in 10 survive.  He has been in ICU for 7 weeks, has had a heart attack, some kidney failure and is on a ventilator.  She reports that they are now trying to slowly wean him off the ventilator and that he does show some small signs of improvement  but still has a long ways to go.  We will maintain periodic contact with Mrs. Hamby and will update as those contacts are made.  The Hamby's are obviously in need of our prayers so please remember them each day.

 Nelson Foehner, FAC

J. D. SPANN:  Doug Bostock received a phone call late this afternoon from J.D. Spann who was transported by ambulance and admitted to Houston N.W. Medical Center, 710 F.M. 1960 West, Room 6033 South Tower, Phone 281-440-1000 last Thursday evening after suffering chest pains. J.D. underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery on Friday.  There was some bleeding yesterday when they removed some of the tubes but they seemed to have stopped that at this point. J.D. visited with Doug briefly to let him know that he was feeling pretty good and getting better.  After a short conversation and tiring, he gave the phone to his wife Shirley.  Shirley stated that although J.D. was recovery, he still had a ways to good and asked for our prayers.  Please remember J.D. and Shirley throughout the week.  J.D. indicated that if all went well he could go home Thursday or Friday.

WILLIAM "BILL" HAMBY:   We received information on Monday that Bill Hamby was in the ICU unit of a hospital but no other info was available.  Bill is a recently enrolled member of the HPROA and lives in the Needville area of Ft. Bend county.  Efforts to determine the location of  the hospital he was in and his condition finally led us to the Crestwood Medical Center in Huntsville, Alabama where Bill is a patient in the surgical ICU unit.  We continue to call the ICU waiting room and a phone number we believe the family may be staying but have not been able to find them or talk to a family member. We hope to make contact with the family tomorrow and have a full report as to his condition.  Please pray for Bill that he would make a full and speedy recovery.

JAMES STOWE - (3-12-08 - Jim Shirley - Forrest) Reports he visited with Jim in the hospital, and he is still not up and about. Doctors report that the blood thinner medication has not yet reached the levels that they want. Keep Jim in your daily prayers.

E.J. MIKEAL - (3-20-08 - Kendrick) Talked to E.J. on the phone. He said he had a mini-stroke a couple of weeks ago. He went to St. Luke's and an Implantable Cardio Defibrillator was installed. He said he is still having to use a walker due to the previous health issues he has experienced. Keep E.J. in your daily prayers.

JAMES A. STOWE - (3-20-08 - James Shirley to Forrest) Reports that Jim Stowe was rushed to the Central Texas Medical Center Hospital in San Marcos, TX, last night (Wed. 3-19-08) when he had much difficulty breathing, which was thought to have been a heart attack. James Shirley stated that Jim Stowe had knee surgery a few weeks ago, and tests done at the hospital revealed that a double blood clot had left the knee surgery area and went to the lungs.  Doctors put in a "screen" in the artery from the knee to catch any additional clots that might "turn loose" and was put on blood thinners. Shirley will keep us updated. Keep Jim Stowe and family in your daily prayers.

ROBERT JESKE:  Robert's wife, Janice, called and advised that she admitted Robert to the Regal Estates Personal Care Home, 3204 Regal Oak Drive, Pearland, Texas. His Alzheimers was requiring round the clock care and she feels that this will give him the specialized care that he needs and allow Janice to rest and still be nearby to attend to any personal needs he might have. Robert's general physical health is fine at this point.  This has to be a profoundly difficult decision to make and we pray that all goes well for both Robert and Janice.  For those who may have traveled this road yourself, you might wish to call Janice and lend some support, her number is 281-489-7242.

 Nelson Foehner, FAC

MARVIN SEBER:  (Update) Marvin was released from the hospital on Monday and is now at the Cypresswood Health and Rehab Center and will be there from 7 to 20 days depending on his rate of rehab and recovery.  The rehab center is located at 10851 Crescent Moon off of Jones Road.  Marvin is in Room #106 with NO phone in the room.  He says he will take your calls when he gets home but would like for you to visit if you are in the area..  The phone number of the Center is 281-890-0171.  Marvin has over time lost vision in one eye and very poor sight in his other eye.  Continue to pray for Marvin that he as a speedy and successful rehab and recovery.  Previous Report  Willard Walden reports that Marvin Seber is in St. Luke's Hospital, Med Center, recovering from knee replacement surgery.  He is recovering well and anticipates that he will move to a rehab facility after dismissal from the hospital. We do not have a room or phone number at this time.  We will update as more information becomes available.  Please remember Marvin in your prayers that he might have a full and speedy recovery.

Elaine Foltz :  Larry has forwarded a medical update on his wife, Elaine, and
we pass it along to our members as he recorded it.  Please keep them both in
your steady prayers.

Elaine had her second round chemo on 3-11-08 since being released from the hosp.  She has lost all her hair again and she is weak from the chemo but other than that she is doing fine.  She has lost about 40 pounds since starting this cancer treatment back in Oct. of 07 but she is seems to remain pretty steady at her current weight.  Her red blood count is low and they are trying to build it back up with iron supplements and this will help with her stamina and strength.  In general she is doing well and looking forward to beating this cancer a second time.  She is scheduled for a "pet Scan" on 3-25-08 and this will tell the drs. if the chemo is shrinking and attacking the cancer.  She is scheduled for her next round of chemo on 4-1-08.  Please continue to keep Elaine in your prayers and thoughts.  We hope to make it to the retiree reunion on Lake Conroe on 3-29-08 but we don't plan that far ahead right now.

Thank everyone for their prayers and concerns and we are praying for all the other retirees dealing with their own personal and medical issues.

God Bless and happy Easter to everyone.

Larry D. Foltz

CAROLYN JORDY:    Bennie reports this morning that Carolyn was admitted to Memorial Herman Woodlands hospital due to dehydration.  She was just not eating enough or drinking enough fluids which began to effect her entire system.  Hopefully, they can reverse this and build up her strength.  Please continue to pray for both Bennie and Carolyn as they continue to struggle with multiple health issues.

Nelson Foehner, FAC

SHERWOOD JETT:   Jeanette Jett sent an update this evening on Sherwood.  He is still in San Jacinto hospital but what seemed desperate yesterday is better today.  He had acute renal failure and they thought congestive heart failure however it appears the heart was not involved however they will be doing more test tomorrow.  His long time on medications, a virus and prostate problems seems to have been the culprits of the past two days.  He has improved and is in Room # 217, at 4401 Garth Road, Baytown.  The phone number of the hospital is 281-420-8600.  Jeanette invites anyone to call him and knows it would cheer him up. So pick up the phone and give him a ring and above all, remember Sherwood and Jeanette in your prayers.

Nelson Foehner, FACBOB FRANCIS (3-13-08 - Kendrick) Bob became very confused yesterday. It is thought he is having more silent seizures. He was transferred to Hermann Hospital last night and is in the Clinical Observation Unit.

CHARLES O. FORD - (3-10-08 - Forrest)  We finally contacted Charlie at home. He  had been in St. Luke's Hospital  due to an esophagus surgery which was in early January 2008. Stated that he had to have a 2nd surgery  9 days later due to a "blow out" from the first surgery. He stated that he was in ICU many days (does not recall how long) but during his ICU stay, he stated that he was over medicated. He was suppose to be medicated according to his weight but the hospital had his weight wrong. His usual weight before his surgery was 185 pounds and he currently weighs 142 pounds, Due to his ICU stay, he was not allowed out of his bed and had no exercise; consequently he lost all muscle tone and so weak, that
he became incapacitated to the point he was unable to walk. He was later transferred to a Re-hab Therapy facility where he was placed on a therapy program and he began to learn to walk again. He was released from the Re-hab Therapy facility last Friday, 3-7-08, and allowed to go home. He says that he is currently doing good and feels good but tires easily and walking now with the aid of a "walker." Please keep  Charlie in your daily prayers.

WILLARD WALDEN
: (3-6-08) Willard went in for day surgery for hernia repair. He is now at home recovery staying close to his pain pill bottle.  All seems to be going well. Hopefully, he will be able to make our next meeting.  Please remember Willard in your prayers that he might have a rapid and full recovery.

BOB FRANCIS (3-5-08 - Kendrick) I learned Bob is in Hermann Hospital. I talked with his wife, Norma, who told me Bob had an accident on a 4-wheeler, New Year's Eve. He suffered a spinal cord injury and had been in St. Joseph hospital until last week when he was transferred to The Institute for Rehabilitation and Research (TIRR). Last Friday he began to have silent seizures and was transferred to the Stroke Unit at Hermann Hospital. The doctor thinks he may have sustained a brain injury at the time of the accident and this is what is causing the seizures. It is also possible he may have had a stroke. He has improved some and plans are being made to transfer him back to TIRR. Please keep Bob and Norma in your prayers.  Update - I received a call from Norma Francis. Bob has been transferred back to TIRR. He is in Room 513A. Update  (3-20-08 - Kendrick) Update - Bob is back at TIRR in Room 306 Bed 2. The doctors have determined he was not having seizures. They are in the process of adjusting his medications.

CAROLYN JORDY - (3-5-08 - E.J. Smith to Forrest) Info from E.J. that Carolyn had been moved to the Woodlands Health Care Center 4650 S. Panther Creek in the Woodlands over the weekend. Stated that that this date 3-5-06 at approx 2 :00 A.M.Carolyn fell out of her bed, and injuries if any, were not known, I then contacted Bennie Jordy who had gotten out of the hospital and was home. He stated that the Health Care Center had called him regarding her falling from her bed, but due to his condition, he could not go to her. The Woodlands Health Care Center sent her to the Woodlands Herman Hospital for X-rays which reflected a contusion on her hip, and she was then transferred back to the Heallth Care Center.. Please continue to pray for both Bennie and Carolyn that God will bring them healing and back to good health.
