Family Assistance Update

VELIA ORTEGA: 7-24-08 Matt Perales reports that Chaplain Monty Montgomery had gone by to visit with Velia on the 5^th floor of Ben Taub hospital. She is in stable condition. Family members were not available so it was difficult to obtain more information. Attempts are being made to make contact with family members to gain more insight as to her recovery. Although Velia is in stable condition, she has a long, long way to go with other health issues she had prior to the shooting incident.

We will update as info becomes available. Please say special prayers for Velia .

MANUEL ORTEGA: 7-24-08 Matt Perales reports that the family will complete final arrangements very likely on Friday. The memorial service for Manny will take place either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Tomball. We will update as soon as final plans are forthcoming. Our condolences go out to the Manny Ortega family.

MARGARET HANEY - (7-22-08 - 6:00 P.M.wife of HPROA Member J.B. Haney - Forrest) We received a phone call from J.B regarding his wife. Her cardiologist had her on blood thinners due to heart palpatations. She began having bad headaches and was taken to Memorial Northwest Memorial on the Loop. The cardiologosts was suppose to keep check on her blood level and blood platelettes but this was not done and she developed a Sub-dural Hemotoma (bleeding in the brain causing the headaches) She also has Dementia and the first stages of Alzheimers. She was later transferred to the Vosswood Nursing Center - 815 Voss Rd, Houston. for therapy. Please keep Margaret in your daily prayers.J

JO M. BANKSTON - 7-22-08 - 6:00 P.M. - J.B. Haney to Forrest) Received information from J.B. that Jo was in the Vosswood Nursing Center - 815 Voss Rd - Houston room #424. (713-463-1060) and was in the room next to his wife Margaret who is in room #420. We called Jo and she stated that she first taken to St. Joseph Hospital and then later transferred to Herman Hospital in the Medical Center. Stated that she had this broken vertebre in her back from the fall but no surgery was performed as the Doctors said that this injury was very painful but felt that it would heal itself. She then was transferred to the Vosswood Nursing Center - 815 Voss Rd. Said to tell all "Hello and to call her" Please keep Jo in your daily prayers

STEVE ANDREWS: (Update 7-23-08) Update on Steve Andrews from Madeline: On Friday, July 18th Steve had quaduaple bypass. Even though blockage was significant,the operation was a success. He attributes this success to all the prayers & support from all of you. He has returned home to Rockport today, in the height of the hurricane, Dolly. However, there will be another procedure in about 6 weeks to unblock a crotid artery in his neck. Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. Madeline Andrews7-21-08- Stephanie Leonard reports this morning that Steve had a quadruple bypass and he is recovering and will likely be moved to a regular hospital room during the day today. It would appear that he has some blockage also in the carotid arteries which will addressed after he recovers from this surgery.

We will attempt to contact him later today once he get squared away in his room. Continue to keep Steve in your prayers as he still has a ways to go.

Johnny Thorton (7-21-08 e-mail to Forrest)
Dear Friends:
We just got back from Johnny's visit to the doctor & they took out the staples. The results of the pathology test are that it was benign (Praise God!). It was however, the type of tumor that reoccurs in the brain. Therefore, they will check him every 3 months with another MRI & then every 6 months. They want to keep a close watch on it, so that if any tumors do reappear on the meninges of the brain, they can resume treatment.

He also had an ultrasound today on the cyst on his thyroid. We won't know the results of that for a week, when we return to the doctor next Friday. Keep us in your prayers for another good report.

He actually got to drive home today & was so glad to be back behind the wheel again. He still has to stay out of the sun & on anti-seizure medication for 6 months.

ROBERT G. BLAYLOCK - (7-19-08 - 2:40 P.M.-Forrest) (Updated) We reached Bobby at his home and he stated he got out of the hospital yesterday and is now resting at home. Stated that this proceedure of doing a artery transplant is a new proceedure. Only approx. 1,000 have been done. Using both veins in the groin, one vein the doctor does the surgery from that vein, and the other vein in the groin, a camera is inserted so the doctor can see what he is doing. He says he is doing pretty good but also stated he is currently on oxygen 24/7. Stated he would keep us posted as to his continued progress. Keep Bobby in your daily prayers...

MANUEL ORTEGA = (8-18-08 - Matt Perales - Forrest) Received information from Matt that Manuel has been in ill health for some 5 years. He had kidney failure and has been on dialysis for over a year. Has diabetes and his right foot was amputated about 2 months ago. The diagnosis now is that the doctors want to amputate his left leg. Manuel has refused this proceedure or any further treatment at this time and only wants to be made comfortable. Manuel was a graduate in HPD Academy #30. Matt states that he got this information from Patti Ortega, Manuel's wife. Please keep the Ortega family in your daily prayers

STEVE ANDREWS: 7-16-08 Steve's wife Madeline reports that Steve is in Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi where he will undergo heart bypass surgery on Thursday, July 17, 2008. Their need right now is our prayers that surgery is successful and recovery is rapid and complete. We will update as information becomes available to us.

JO BANKSTON: We were advised this morning that Jo had fell and was in a Medical Center hospital. She was located at Memorial Herman Hospital, Room 411, Cullen Pavilion, 713-704-7441. She suffered a cracked vertebrae and is bedridden at this time. She stated that she fell about two weeks ago and has been hospitalized since. She expects to be moved to a rehab center today or tomorrow. We will update when she relocates. Jo said she is taking phone calls so give her a call and remember Jo in your prayers that she might recover fully and rapidly.

Fred & Lila Berner - Received an email for Fred. He had a scary bout with a detached retina in his right eye but thanks to a good doctor in San Antonio, who arc welded in back in place (laser surgery), he is doing well. He said he is having absolutely no pain from his knee replacement. Lila is still having back problems and has been tested for a Medtronics Spinal Cord Stimulator (similar to a Tenns Unit). She got about 70% pain relief in the test so she will have a permanent unit put in place sometime after August.

CAROLYN JORDY - (UPDATE 7-15-08 Rli Rivera) Carolyn has been released from the hospital, and move to a hospice (6-23-08 - Bennie Jordy - Forrest) Received info from E.J. Smith that Carolyn was in the Memorial Herman Hospital Woodlands. We then later talked with Bennie who stated that Carolyn had a stomach problem and vomited continously Thursday night (6-19-08) and she was taken to the Hospital Friday. She had not eaten for the past 3 days, could not keep anything on her stomach, not even water. Doctors seem to think that she has an infection somewhere in the stomach area. She is to under-go extensive test tonight (Monday and Tuesday 6-23 and 6-24-08. She is still loosing weight. Bennie is hopeful and prayful that the doctors can find what this problen is and correct it soon. Carolyn and Bennie both have had their plates full for a long time, Please keep them both and their family in your daily Prayers.

Nell Neely- (Wife of HPROA Member, Johnny Neely) (UPDATE) - Went by St. Luke's Hospital and visited with Nell & Johnny. She is making some progress and hopes to be discharged the latter part of this week. She will continue her rehab with home health care. Continue to pray for Johnny, Nell, and their family, as well as the doctors and nurses taking care of Nell.

DANNY J. MCBEE - 7-14-08 - E-mail from Bob Sieckman - Forrest) - Received e-mail message from Bob who stated that Danny McGee has entered Hermann Hospital at 10:00 A,M, this date for treatment of stomach cancer. The cancer has spread to the liver and lungs. Bob Sieckman states that Danny is his neighbor and he will keep us updated as he is in constant contact with Danny's wife. Please keep Danny and family in your daily prayers

Bobby Blalock (7-14-2008) will be entering the Medical City Hospital in Dallas Monday afternoon, I got the lucky draw and I am having the heart Valve replacement by way of the artery in my groin. If every thing goes well I should be out of the hospital in 4 to 5 days. If it doesn't I'll be out sooner. Fay and Sheryl will be staying in the Marriot Residence Inn located at 10333 N Central Expressway, the phone number is (214)750-8220. The number for the hospital is (972)566-2200, The surgery will be done some time on Tuesday. Wish me luck!

CHESTER MASSEY: Johnny Bonds visited with Chester yesterday and reports that Chester is doing good and they had a good chat. David Massey reports this morning the Chester is in good health, eating well and as long as he takes his medication properly he does fairly well with some periods of confusion. David hopes to bring Chester to the HPROA meeting tomorrow. Hopefully they will make it. David and Johnny both agree that Chester would like for some his friends to stop by and visit with him. We encourage anyone who has the time to go by and share a couple of old stories with him. Chester is a resident at the Hampton on Pinegate. Turn south on East T.C. Jester from the North Loop, go one block and turn left on Pinegate, go one block and it will be on your right. Continue to remember Chester in your prayers.

FORREST TURBEVILLE: 7-8-08 Forrest had a surgical procedure early this morning at St. Joseph hospital to remove a cancer from his right cheek (That cheek being on his face). Surgery was brief, his recovery was quick and he and Sue were back home by 11AM. He is still somewhat medicated this evening and feels a little washed out but should be back into the swing of things on Wednesday. Probably a few phone calls on Wednesday would be in order for therapeutic purposes. Doctors feel they were successful in removing the entire infected area. Please pray for his continued recovery and good health.

The silent auction at the Crockett Reunion was a great success as it brought in $1290.00. These funds were donated to the Family Assistance Committee.

Your Family Assistance Committee would like to thank all that donated the items for the auction and extend our thanks on to those that actually won the bid for their generous contribution.

We especially want to acknowledge and extend thanks to Vickie Rayne, Myrna Miller, Tillie Salinas and our Entertainment Chairman, D.A. Miller for their efforts and hard work that made this auction a great success.
