Waller alderman Kulhanek, 76

Maxie George Kulhanek, who served for more than 30 years as a Houston police officer and an alderman in Waller northwest of Houston, died Sunday. He was 76.
Kulhanek, a lifelong resident of the small farming and ranching town, was an alderman, or town councilman, for 32 years. Last May he chose not to seek re-election, but his son, Charles Kulhanek, ran for a seat and was elected to replace his father.
He retired as a sergeant from the Houston Police Department in 1993 after 31 years of service. His police training made Kulhanek an effective leader on police matters in Waller, said former City Secretary Peggy Albert, who worked with Kulhanek for years.
In his work as an alderman, Kulhanek made decisions on local budget matters and development issues in the town of 2,092 residents. The town's government includes a mayor and five aldermen, who serve alternating two-year terms.
Albert said Kulhanek was "quiet, easygoing and slow to anger. He loved to share a joke when he heard one ... ."
Kulhanek was born March 22, 1926, in Waller, where he was a farmer and rancher for many years.
Prior to joining the Houston Police Department, he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Columbia during World War II.
Maxie leaves his wife, Louise, with whom he recently celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary; three sons, Maxie Jr., Charles and Joe Kulhanek; a sister, Margie Abel Jr.; a brother, Carl Kulhanek; and four grandchildren.
Services were held Wednesday at the Canon Funeral Home chapel in Waller, with burial at St. Martin de Porres Cemetery there.
The family suggested donations in Kulhanek's memory to St. John's Lutheran Church, the 100 Club of Houston or other charities.

Uncle Maxie, you will be greatly missed, especially at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I never knew someone who could sleep straight up in a chair and snore after eating a hearty meal!! In my heart always, Love, your niece, Robin |
