Retired Sergeant Floyd Cobler who retired from the department on March 26, 1987, after serving over forty (40) years, passed away on Wednesday, May 22, 2002.
At the time of his retirement, he was assigned to the Emergency Communications Division.
He joined the City of Houston on April 3, 1947 with the Utilities Department, Water Division, and on November 16, 1948, he entered Police Academy Class No. 2.
He is survived by two sons, Bill Cobler and Thomas Forest Cobler and wife, June Cobler.
Floyd loved to travel and did so frequently, claiming Alaska as his favorite place to visit. His favorite place to work was as a long-standing volunteer at The Grand 1894 Opera House in Galveston and he became the yardstick by which volunteers measured themselves. A recipient of The Grand's volunteer of the Year Award, Floyd was further honored by The Grand when they renamed it the Floyd Cobler Volunteer of the Year Award.
A gathering to honor floyd's memory will be held at The Grand in Edna's Room on Tuesday, June 4 at 5:00 p.m.
His body is entrusted to Forest Park East Funeral Home, 21410 Gulf Freeway, Webster, Texas, (281) 332-3111.
Visitation for family and friends will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, May 25, 2002, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at Forest Park East Funeral Home Chapel on Sunday, May 26, 2002, at 1:30 p.m.
Burial will follow at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale, Houston, Texas.
