BENNETT "BEN" G. DENHAM, age 71, of Fresno, TX, retired Houston Police Department Officer, business owner, and former Fort Bend County Commissioner, passed away Thursday, August 8, 2002. Ben was born on July 14, 1931 in Siminole, Oklahoma. He graduated from Missouri City High School in 1950 and soon enlisted in the United States Navy, serving on the USS McKean during the Korean Conflict. In 1955 he joined the Houston Police Department, retiring from the force after serving 22 years, 2 months and 2 days. Ben was elected as County Commissioner for two terms from 1983 to 1990. The event that Ben looked forward to most each year was the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, where he was a Lifetime Member and was in charge of Star Security for the entertainers for over 40 years. Through his adventures with the Rodeo, he made some of the best memories of his life, and developed close, lifelong relationships with several people associated with the Rodeo, including many entertainers. He served 10 years as a Director and was a Lifetime Member of the Fort Bend County Fair. He was instrumental in the inception and establishment of the Fort Bend Senior Citizens Project, and served as a Board Member of Fort Bend Senior Citizens, Inc. Ben was an active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion, and the Stafford City Lions Club. He was passionate about giving back to the residents of the community, and did so by continuously donating his time and energy to improvement projects. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; his children, Nancy Davis-Lagden, Tina Ianni, and Michael Denham, and their spouses; eight grandchildren; his sisters, Darlene Garner, Micki Oberolf, and Kathy Medve; his brother, Barkley Denham; many special nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws, all who loved him dearly; and his very special little canine friend, Baby Girl. Friends are invited to visitation with the family from 4:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday, August 11, 2002 in the Chapel of Earthman Funeral Directors Southwest, 12555 South Kirkwood, Stafford, with a Rosary to be recited at 7:00 PM. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, August 12, 2002 in the Chapel of Earthman Funeral Directors Southwest. Interment will follow at Morton Cemetery in Richmond, TX. For those desiring, memorials may be made to Ben's favorite charity, the Fort Bend Senior Citizens, Inc., P.O. Box 1488, Rosenberg, TX 77471.

My Beloved Bennett, I know you are there watching over me, and everyone you loved. This past year was one of the hardest of my life. I lost my love, and my friend...you. I did not think I would make it, and here it is almost 5 months later and I am stil here. I don't want to be some days, but I have to go on like you told me to do. You are very missed, the sun does not shine as bright, nor do the stars twinkle as beautifully without you here. I am selfish, I know you are better off and happier and out of pain, but I miss you. I will always love you. Save a place for me. Love, bb and Babygirl |

To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. Thank you Ben Denham. |

Ben investigated me as a applicant to HPD back in 1968. I grew up way out in the country and it was a joke between him and I that I must have been hurting for a job to come all the way to Houston. Back in those days we had low water crossings on public roads and you couldn't cross in high water. I considered Ben a friend. Robert DeWayne Burger. |

Ben did my background in 1968 when I applied for the academy. My mother and wife were afraid because of the danger involved as an officer. He assured them that nothing would happen to me. I retired on July 1992 after 24 yrs 11 mos and am still working with HPD as a civilian and plan to retire on 12-21-02 again "THANKS BEN" and when you start recruiting in again save me a place in Heaven. |

I was fortunate to have known Ben at HPD. He always had a smile on his face, and he had a great ability to reduce anything to it's proper level. My prayers and my sympathy go out to his family.

We are truly sorry to learn of Ben's death. Ben & I worked together 22 years with HPD & then proudly worked in his campaigns for commissioner & acted as his double in one campaign, which Ben thought was hilarious. Barbara & I are in Colorado & will be unable to attend Ben's funeral, but we will be there in heart, spirit, & prayer. Our deepest sympanthy is sent to Brenda at thist time. Charlie Ford |

Ben will be missed by all who knew him. Ben was a kind loving man who raised a great family. He always did for others, as a policeman, politian, and friend. May he rest in peace. My sympathy to Nancy, Tina & Mike and families. Heaven just got another angel to watch over you all. Love, Cindy Shaw Cox |
