OLGA YVONNE SOLIZ was escorted by her guardian angels to meet our heavenly father on Friday, July 5, 2002. Olga was a loving and giving mother who dedicated her life to her children and was a friend, mentor, advisor and role model to many. The widow of Fred Soliz, Olga is survived by daughter Attorney Itze Olga Maria Soliz Matthews and her husband Jeffrey and son Everett Fernando Antonio Soliz and his wife Maria Soledad. Parents Wilfred and Betty Navarro preceded her in death. Olga is further survived by her brother Chief Wilfred Navarro and wife Mondie and nieces and nephews Gerealdine Fidler; Nera and Larry NcElhaney; Demetrius and Martha Navarro; Lavette and Oscar Camarena; Wilfred III and Dooley Navarro; and Yvonne Bonner. Olga graduated from Jefferson Davis High School and received her degree in business administration after attending the University of Houston and the University of Arizona. She was the owner of Olga Soliz & Associates, a management and consulting firm. Olga was an outstanding Houstonian and a great American who truly believed in the spirit of giving. A tireless advocate for education, youth, women and voting, she contributed countless hours and many talents to numerous organizations, including the Houston Hispanic Forum; Planned Parenthood of Texas; Wesley Community Center; LULAC Chapter 643; Latino Learning Center; Familias Unidas; American Leadership Forum, Class IV; Chicano Family Center; Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce; and the Institute of Hispanic Culture. A pioneer in politics, Olga will be remembered as an avowed feminist who worked diligently for the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and blazed many trails for women who followed. In 1979, she was the first Latina ever to run for Houston City Council and in 1982 was among the first Latinas in Texas to run for the Texas House of Representatives. An active Republican, Olga served on the Republican National Hispanic Assembly, as Chair of Precinct 222. She was also once President of the Women's Equity Action League, NOW and the Harris County Women's Political Caucus. Among her many awards, those she treasured most included her family - by Familias Unidas as "Mother of the Year" and by Metro as "Hispanic Family of the Year". She was also named a "Woman of Distinction" by the Colitis Foundation and "Woman of the Year" by the Harris County Women's Political Caucus and the Texas Women's Political Caucus. Pallbearers will be Jeffrey Matthews, David Adame, Sonny Flores, Brad Flemming, Joseph Soliz, and Everitt Soliz. Olga leaves an immeasurable void in our community, and our city has suffered a great loss. Her family wishes to thank everyone for their thoughtfulness and prayers during her difficult illness. Viewing will be on Monday, July 8 from 9am to 9pm, Earthman Funeral Home, 2420 Fannin with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Mass, Tuesday, July 9, 10:00am, Holy Rosary Church, 3600 Milam. Family and friends invited to Olga's home, 2102 Wroxton immediately following services for reflection and friendship.
