  The Crockett Reunion 2005
...and a little History

Once again a "large" time was had by all that were able to make the reunion. This was the 17th reunion held in Crockett, the first being in 1988 hosted by John Collins, Tut Rich, C.D.Taylor and Joe Davis. Dot & I knew we had a tough act to follow.

The Reunion started out being held at the Crockett Inn, then the Senior Citizens Center and finally moved to the Crockett Civic Center as more room was needed for the ever increasing number of Retirees attending. If I am not mistaken the largest number attending was 212.

The decision to form a retired officers association was made at the Crockett Reunion in 1994. After the reunion was over there were 6 retirees sitting around a table discussing how the active officers were due to receive another raise and the retirees were being left out again. We decided to form our own association.

Those present at this discussion were. Bill Gaines, Sgt Stephens, Jack Guy, Tut Rich, Ike Eickenhorst and Chuck Smith. We ask Ike if he would get the ball rolling as he lived in Houston. He GOT the ball rolling and the rest is history. If all the Retired Officers would think back as to what their retirement was in 1994 and what they have today, our membership would double.

I'll stop the reminiscing and get on with the report...We had 163 retirees and guest at the Reunion...We signed up at least one new member...ate all we could hold of Harvey Triggs Bar-B-Q--and made $765 on the silent auction. How about that!

I would like to thank all of the folks that donated items for the auction; I think Chester & Ruth Massey had to use a U-Haul for all their items. Betty Rich did a super job getting all the items set out and handling the auction, thanks Betty. I also want to thank Margery Doetterl for taking the pictures of the reunion.

The decorations were done by Dee Kimble, Betty Rich and Dot Smith. Lamar and Tut put the table cloths on the silent auction tables and I advised (that’s a lot more fun). Steve Felchak was in charge of the tables for the food. All I saw him do was "sample".

Joe Eckenrode won the prize for being the oldest member attending, just barely beating out Harry Hall. Mary Simmons won the prize for being the youngest member. She edged out Stefanie (the kid) Leonard at the last minute.

We had quite a few door prizes that had been donated and I thank everyone that contributed. Our renowned Executive Director, Bill Elkin, drew the tickets for the door prizes and there were some statements from the crowd that he was "palming" them. Most of these statements came from Dot Smith as she didn't win anything.

For all of you that were wondering if Fred Walschburger on his "antique" Harley made it all the way to Crockett---he did. I don't know if he made it home.

I know, I keep telling everyone they need to make these reunions but I can't help it. When I looked out over the crowd this year there were a few more faces missing. All of those missing faces were "Family" to Dot & I and I just expect to you as well. I hope the Good Lord sees fit to let EVERYONE return next year.

In closing I want to especially thank Dot for carrying most of the load in preparing for the Reunion.

Later, Chuck
