'UNTIL TOMORROW"
Monday, September 19, 2016
Stella Steely Milam wrote a book, 'UNTIL TOMORROW" about her deceased husband, HPD's Ellis Eugene Milam.  This is a geneology book also about both of their families, including her remembrances of Ellis.   It is in the Clayton Geneology Library on Caroline in Houston.  Please consider placing this somewhere appropriate.

Message:Just a question about an HPD policy that affects all retired officers, including HPROA members. Regardless of where retired officers now live, HPD requires them to appear at the Travis building for the sole purpose of taking a photo in order to renew their retired ID card. This is a change - in the past, I was able to email a photo. Now, they demand a personal appearance, with the statement "Our Photo/Identification card system does not allow us to upload outside photos" A copy of that response is available. Would it be possible for someone at HPROA to address the bad policy with HPD? Many thanks. Arnie Schulze

Hi I'm trying to find the badge number for my grandmother's brother Vernon Houston Maness. He was a Houston police officer probably from 1950 until he retired. There is no one left from his generation that has this knowledge and he had no children that have this information. Please tell me if you know how I could find out his badge number. It is so important to me now that I'm an adult and I'm trying to put our family history together for my children and their children. Any help you can give me would be appreciated. Thank you so very much, Belinda Stone

I retired last year after 36 years from class #86. During my tenure I served under several U.S. Presidents, from Carter in 1979, to our current president.
I can't remember ever working the streets and not feeling I had the support for my profession from an active or past president until the current one. Up until the recent Dallas assassinations, the current president has shown more support for the Police haters than for the Police Officers, who by the way, are out in the street to serve, protect & die for the very people that are spewing Hatorade towards them.
I also believe the message that needs to be spoken more is that "any" person that has an encounter with a Police Officer should not run, fight or resist in any way. If an Officer is out of line, abusive or illegal, there are safe channels available in every department to complain on those Officers. If a person believes they can win a street encounter with an Officer by resisting, shouldn't be surprised to receive an unfortunate outcome. Maybe better slogans would be "Just Comply-You Won't Die" &

I really get weary of the local (and national) news media wringing their hands over an Officer being killed. They report the story (more or less) and then turn around and stab us in the back on another "story". It is really annoying how often they are to paint us in a bad light with little or no information and the investigation barely under way. They show us in a bad light and then go on to the next news cycle. When the facts and investigation is exposed it is rare that the Officers acted improperly. BUT THE NEWS MEDIA NEVER CORRECTS THE RECORD OR THE IMPRESSION THEY HAVE CREATED IN THE COMMUNITY.

The slaughter of Officers protecting the protesters in Dallas was a horrible thing. It amazes me how much "support" is shown in the community when these things happen. It is a good and heartwarming thing. However, that is the same folks that bend over back to not be picked for Jury Duty and then slap the wrist of the same thugs we deal with daily.

I will now step down from the soap box.

Thanks

Medicare & COH Insurance
Saturday, July 9, 2016
Looking for some advice and information about Medicare and COH insurance.  I retired in Aug 2013.  Will be in Phasedown until Aug 2018.  My wife is 11 months older than me so she turns 65 in October of this year.  I turn 65 in Sep of 2017.  Will qualify for active officer rate until the end of Phasedown but I have been told that my wife should apply for Medicare in October and me in Sep 2017.  COH Benefits told me last year that we do not have to apply for Medicare since we are on an employer sponsored insurance plan.  The local Social Security office told me that my wife should sign up during her birthday month to avoid the penalties of late enrollment.  I am a little confused....

Has anyone had this situation and how have they resolved it?

We live in Williamson County between Georgetown and Round Rock.  Do you know what the retirees in our area may be doing about Medicare Advantage plans, Medicare supplements, Medigap plans?

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Food for Thought for Conservatives

A lot of people have brought up the fact that they won't vote for Trump if he's the eventual nominee. I just want to put something in perspective.

Justice Scalia's seat is vacant. Ginsberg is 82 years old, Kennedy is 79, Breyer is 77, and Thomas is 67. Nowadays, the data shows that the average age of a Supreme Court retirement or death occurs after 75.

These are 5 vacancies that will likely come up over the next 4-8 years. The next President will have the power to potentially create a 7-2 Supreme Court skewed in their ideology.

Think about that... 7-2. If the next President appoints 5 young justices, it will guarantee control of the Supreme Court for an entire generation. 7-2 decisions will hold up much more over time than 5-4 decisions which are seemed to be lacking in mandate.

Hillary has made it clear she will use the Supreme Court to go after the 2nd Amendment. She has literally said that the Supreme Court was wrong in its Heller decision stating that the Court should overturn and remove the individual right to keep and bear arms. Period.

Everyone saying that they won't vote for one candidate or the other if they are the GOP nominee, please realize this. If Hillary Clinton wins and gets to make these appointments, you likely will never see another Conservative victory at the Supreme Court level for the rest of your life. Ever.

If you are a Conservative, a vote for anyone but the GOP nominee, whomever that will be, is a vote for Hillary Clinton.

Dear Officers

Dear Officers,

I have noticed several times in different articles when Police Academy Class # 25 is mentioned it shows it to be in the year of 1963...Class # 25 graduated on the 4th of March, 1962. Their school had started in the fall of 1961.

I am attaching several articles pertaining to the graduation in hopes it will help to correct the date.

My husband, Herman Heath- Badge # 1599, graduated in Class # 25 and as we sadly read about another of his classmates passing away, Ray Collins, I just wanted to correct the date these guys walked so proudly across that stage in the Music Hall to officially become Houston Police Officers.  We wives were so proud of that day too after all the weeks of hard study our husbands had done to reach that final step. I am sure you remember your special day too.

Thank you for your service.

Respectfully,

Barbara Heath

 Hi!

I am the head of casting for Atlas Media Corp - we're a television production company that has produced many documentary crime series including "In the Line of Fire" which highlighted police heroism working with NYPD Chief Bill Bratton.

We've also produced other crime series like "Dr G: Medical Examiner" "The Mind of a Murderer" and "Stalked" all for Investigation Discovery network.

Dr G took place in the Orlando pathology office and we did 8 seasons of that show. Our cameramen became licensed by the state of Florida to film crime scenes and in the autopsy room. We operate within the highest professional standards in the industry.

Contacting your office for a new series we're working on developing and wondering if you can help.

We are currently seeking and interviewing retired female detectives for a new prime time series on major cable. The series would be her narrating/talking about past cases. Homicides, stalking, sex crimes, kidnapping, etc. Only cases that led to convictions and on the public record.

We are seeking women with outgoing personalities, not shy around cameras with some great stories to tell. This is going to be pitched to a prime time cable networks that skew to a female audience. Ideally she's also under 55 years old.

I am contacting organizations like yours in various cities for possible candidates. If you know of someone great - I'd love to hear about it.

If you do happen to know a woman the fits the bill for this - feel free to forward this message to them and they contact me directly if interested. I'm also happy to answer any questions if someone from your org wants to contact me.

Thanks so much for your time and for any assistance you can provide.

Best!
